Grandfather's fishing boxes inspired playful storage

When product developer Petra Kammari Enarsson was young and often moved, she furnished with old fishing boxes given to her by her grandfather. Years later, when developing EKET storage series, she remembered those boxes. Imagine if EKET could be just as flexible – but more playful? Petra and her team developed a mix of shelves, drawers and cabinets in different colours and shapes to be combined as you like. When life and needs change, just move, add or remove parts.

What is constructed board?

We use constructed boards when manufacturing many of our pieces of furniture, such as tables and wardrobes. They are light and resource-efficient, yet still stable and strong. Each board has a frame made of chipboard, fibreboard or solid wood, while the inside is a honeycomb filling structure made of mostly recycled paper, which is extra durable thanks to its special construction. The board is then covered with a protective paint, foil or veneer depending on the style wanted.

Environment

By using fibreboard with a particle board frame and honeycomb paper as filling material in this product, we use less wood per product. That way, we take better care of resources. We want to have a positive impact on the planet. That is why by 2030, we want all materials in our products to be recycled or renewable, and sourced in responsible ways.

Before and after: transitional room turns into room for two
Before and after: transitional room turns into room for two

Welcome to a home of another family participating in our TV project "HOME IDEA with IKEA". 25-year-old Vitalijus and his 14-year-old sister Nastė living together in a transitional room are the heroes of this week. They share the three-room apartment with their parents Liudmila and Sergėjus, their aunt Jelena and their puppy Ričardas. A big family means a lot of action at home. To take some action towards a better life at home, they had a helping hand of our interior designer Toma Montvilaitė.

Dreams do come true! The winning family of the first TV project "HOME IDEA with IKEA" have already received the main prize - renewal of the whole apartment. More space, more light and more room for the belongings of the big family: interior solutions by IKEA designer Toma Montvilaitė have made their life easier.

“This room hasn't been repaired for 15 years. The wallpapers are peeling off, the carpeting is outdated and causes allergies, and the wardrobes we have aren't enough to fit in all of our stuff,” this is how Giedrė and Vitalijus have introduced their 14-square-meter bedroom to us. See how this room has changed since IKEA interior designer Eglė Čyvė started working on it.

The 50th anniversary episode of "Home Idea with IKEA" invites us to Kaunas. The occasion is special, no less than the heroine of this week, the golden-ager Laima who is bursting with joy and energy. Having worked as an accountant all her life, she has finally discovered her true vocation and now spends most of her time with her grandchildren. Laima is full of love for the little ones yet tends to forget showing some of it to herself. She lives in an old apartment and sleeps on the couch in the room that used to belong to her already adult daughters. Together with the interior designer Laura, we came to furnish a bedroom that she has fairly deserved.

Story

From grandfather's fishing boxes to playful storage

When product developer Petra Kammari Enarsson was a young student and often moved, she used to furnish her apartments with old fishing boxes given to her by her grandfather who lived on the west coast of Sweden. Years later, when Petra was developing the new EKET storage series, those boxes came to mind. How could she make the series as flexible as the boxes?

New technologies, new hobbies, a new family member ... both small and large changes affect life and people's needs at home. Not least when it comes to all the things that we need space for. Petra Kammari Enarsson is a product developer at IKEA and often visits the homes of customers to experience their everyday living and how good storage can make life at home a little easier. She remembers a family in Copenhagen which expanded every other weekend with the daughter from a previous relationship. ”She didn't have her own room, but the family had a solution where she had a loft bed in the living room and her private things were in a chest on the floor”. Petra thinks it's a good example of how more and more people are living in small spaces, and that a large part of everyday living takes places in the living room where we want things to be both practical and stylish.

Flexible furniture for new needs

Another obvious trend around the world is that many people move more often - just as Petra did when she was young. ”The problem is that a lot of storage furniture is so inflexible – upon moving or new needs arising, they can't be adapted. This means storage isn't optimal and it's difficult to keep track of all your things”. These insights inspired Petra and her colleagues to start looking at a more flexible and personal storage solution – something that can easily be updated so that people don't have to buy new furniture as soon as something in life changes. Petra then started to think about those fishing boxes she had when she was young and which were so easy to stack and move as needed. What if you could make a piece of furniture which consists of various smart modules that can be easily moved around, removed and added to?

Building with blocks

Petra and her team started by ordering cardboard boxes in various sizes. They took the boxes to different room environments where they moved them around like building blocks – stacking and combining them in various ways. The team also researched detailed facts about storage: on average, how many magazines do we have at home? What’s the ideal height for people to put down their mobile phones? ”Many of us put keys, telephones or bags in a specific place when we come home. We usually do it automatically, without thinking about it”, says Petra. The height that seems to suit most people is 80 cm, so a shelf at that height was a given in the mix of shelves, drawers and cabinets in different colours and styles that eventually became the EKET storage series. ”I'm so pleased that we chose to prioritise playfulness and freedom of choice with all the colours and sizes of EKET”, says Petra, who's looking forward to visiting more homes. ”I think that the customers will find lots of exciting combinations that we haven't even thought of!”.
