From a laptop screen to your kitchen

"This is the pilot project for a lighting technique that is actually completely new for us," says STRÖMLINJE LED worktop lighting engineer Lars Nilsson. Working with the goal of making a better worktop light, Lars and the STRÖMLINJE design team used a lighting technique originally developed for laptops, combined with a construction that is amazingly flexible, water resistant and can connect together to fit practically any kitchen.

How to make your kitchen functional and sustainable
How to make your kitchen functional and sustainable

Your kitchen is the heart of your home. How it performs and how it looks are two important factors. Even though doors and drawer fronts are the main style decision you make when updating your kitchen, don’t forget to pay attention to other important details that can make your kitchen more functional, efficient and sustainable.

STRÖMLINJE LED worktop lighting

The light we're happy is late

You know how being late can cause stress. We know too. Delaying a product’s release often means sales plans go out the window, production comes to a screeching halt, and hundreds of people have a frantic job to make up for the unexpected stop. But in the case of STRÖMLINJE LED worktop lighting, we couldn't be happier for a late arrival. It gave us the chance to make a better product.

Kitchen light should combine direct light for cooking and mood lighting for dining. Not to mention adapt to kitchens of all sizes and heights, as well as shrug off the odd burst of steam or splash of water. For STRÖMLINJE LED worktop lighting, we wanted to combine these needs.

From a laptop screen to your kitchen

The technique we used was first developed for laptop screens and televisions. "This technique lets us make lights that are very thin, flexible and can actually be connected together like building blocks to fit almost any sort of kitchen," says our engineer Lars Nilsson. They're also water resistant and can be dimmed or brightened by remote control. There was just one thing that wasn't right.

We’re our own toughest critics

Our policy is to have stricter safety regulations than any individual country. Which is why Lars had a special eye on STRÖMLINJE. "We found trace elements of mercury used to harden the plastic resin in the lighting fixture," he says. "The amount according to international standards was completely fine, but not for us. "Due to its toxicity level IKEA has banned mercury (along with lead and cadmium) from everything we make, as part of our commitment to make the safest possible products.

Values that inspire

We decided to stop production and find a safer alternative. STRÖMLINJE was happily delayed a year before sales release, something that makes Lars proud. "There was no question about making the absolute safest product. Values like these are what inspires me to come to work each morning."
