Weaving a better future for handmade rugs and the people who make them

Rug weaving in India has a rich history, and nurturing this unique craftsmanship starts with the skilled men and women who make IKEA rugs. Together with our suppliers, we have consolidated weaving into centres with good working conditions, fair wages, stable work and care for the environment. It’s a more sustainable way of producing handmade rugs — one that ensures the well-being of the weavers and their communities, the resources we use and our business.

What is wool?

Wool is a natural material that many of us love to keep close to our bodies. It keeps us warm when it’s cold and cool when it’s warm, and it’s good at absorbing moisture too. Great qualities for rugs, throws and more! We want all wool in our products to come from responsible sources by 2025. That’s why we’ve begun the journey towards complying with the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) with strict demands on animal welfare, land management and traceability.

Environment

All the cotton in our products comes from more sustainable sources. This means that the cotton is either recycled, or grown with less water, less fertilisers and less pesticides, while increasing profit margins for the farmers. At least 50% (weight) of this product is made from wool, a renewable material.

Materials

80% wool, 20% cotton
