We always want to offer you a variety of healthy and more sustainable food choices at IKEA. Take our veggie balls, for example. They’re packed with nutritious ingredients, such as chickpeas, green peas, carrots, bell peppers, corn, kale and more. None of which contain gluten, soy, nut, egg or lactose. Plus, they have a lower carbon footprint. Try them right here at our Restaurant or take some home from our Swedish Food Market.

A buffet of good

In Sweden, the possibility to roam freely in nature is protected by the ‘Allemansrätten’ principle. When bringing together meatballs, mash and cream sauce – Sweden’s No.1 dish – that’s the name we chose. Just like nature, they touch the soul of Sweden and we believe that all should be able to enjoy them, any time. To us, ALLEMANSRÄTTEN is everyone’s right to forest, field and a fine meal of meatballs. To turn good into great, we added two modern classics too, veggie balls and chicken meatballs.

The recipe for the classic IKEA meatball has been a tasty example of traditional Swedish cooking since 1985. Since then we have extended our meatball family with several alternatives, for flexitarians, vegans and fish-lovers. And soon we’ll have something for meat-lovers who don’t want to eat meat. With more alternatives it becomes easier for you to find your personal favourite, and influence how big environmental impact your own meal should have.

Chef Annika Dunnico

“Let´s take the meat out of the meatball! That was the crazy idea kicking off the veggie ball development. We wanted it to show that this is vegetables only, so we used large and clearly visible chunks. Their variety of colours are just beautiful. We also wanted most people to be able to enjoy them. So we excluded dairy products, making them vegan. While we were at it, we created a lovely chicken meatball too. Now, we’re offering meatballs for everyone. With or without meat.”

Making meatballs for everyone

“Our beef and pork meatball is famous. But not everybody eats meat. Now we’ve adapted it so everybody can enjoy it,” says Annika Dunnico who helped create the ALLEMANSRÄTTEN products. There are three ball alternatives – beef and pork meatballs, vegetable balls and chicken balls. Now, more people can have a taste of Swedish culture. As meat production contributes to climate change, more vegetarian ball meals can have a positive impact on the environment, too.
