It’s all in the molecules

At IKEA, a bit of science helps us become more sustainable in our production. We’re using a new dyestuff that sticks to cotton better - even at lower temperatures. What does this mean exactly? It means we use less dyestuff and less water in the production – and we cut our energy-use too. All this translates to a more sustainable solution that saves on precious resources with beautiful results.

What is cotton?

Cotton is one of the world's most appreciated and used natural fibres. Textiles in cotton are soft, hardwearing and can be washed at high temperatures. They are also good at breathing and absorbing moisture – making them pleasant to wear close to the body. Today at IKEA we use more and more recycled cotton and strive to make sure that all the new cotton we use has been grown and produced with less and less amounts of pesticides, fertilisers and water.

Environment

We want to have a positive impact on the planet. That is why by 2030, we want all materials in our products to be recycled or renewable, and sourced in responsible ways. No optical brightener has been used. Non-chlorine bleached. This product is coloured with a dyestuff that adheres to cotton at lower temperatures. This means we use less water and energy in the dyeing process. The cotton in this product is grown with less water, less chemical fertilizers and less chemical pesticides, while increasing profit margins for the farmers. That way, we lower our environmental impact.
