This week's heroine, Danguolė, has a wide range of hobbies. She paints, felts wool, styles her family's hair, writes poetry, and is even working on a new book. All of this and even more happens in a room that's just 20 square metres.

Before the renovation

For Danguolė, her room isn't just a bedroom; it's more like a compact apartment where she rests, works, crafts, entertains herself, and even hosts her guests. However, despite its versatility, many items struggled to find space in this room, and the dark furniture didn't quite foster creativity.
“Despite the owner being a highly artistic individual, the room itself lacked inspiration. Our aim was to infuse the space with more light, airiness and functionality.”

Textiles for more than just cosiness

Rugs, cushions, curtains and other fabrics can update a space without the need for new furniture, instantly creating a cosy and airy atmosphere. Sometimes, they can even cleverly conceal unwanted interior objects. In this room, for instance, curtains hide a piping on the wall and, by extending the rod, they can serve to separate a workspace or to hide a wall storage solution.

A sofa, a single bed and a double bed in one

Before the makeovers, the owners of this room used to sleep on her sofa with just a mattress pad, which wasn't ideal for a good night's sleep. To improve her comfort, we replaced the old sofa with a HEMNES day-bed equipped with two foam mattresses. This piece of furniture functions as a single bed and can easily be converted into a double bed when needed.

The three large drawers provide ample storage space for spare blankets, pillows, bed linen and other items. The lighting by the day-bed is perfect for bedtime reading, and during the day it blends seamlessly into the space, resembling a stylish sofa for guests to sit on.

Like the solution? This furniture combination (two wardrobes, a day-bed with two mattresses and wall shelves above it) is available for 1693,96 €.

Storage under, over and on both sides of the bed

Danguolė desired a roomy wardrobe to accommodate all her necessities, for which our PLATSA modular wardrobe was a perfect fit. On one side, closer to the desk, she could organise her hobby tools, while on the other side, her clothes could find their place. The upper cabinets offer storage for less frequently used items. Inside the wardrobe, battery-operated lighting ensures easy access to belongings even in the dark. Such a framing solution with extra shelves above the day-bed maximizes wall space and provides enough room for everything, from books to boxes to decorations.

Welcome to the living room

  • We have transformed the wall above the TV bench into a personal gallery, showcasing Danguolė's paintings.
  • A rattan table on castors serves dual purposes as a coffee table for guests and a bedside table for convenient access to essentials for the bedtime or upon waking up.
  • A handwoven armchair by the window, along with a floor lamp and a pouffe for extra leg comfort, offers an ideal spot for me-time, knitting or reading

“To highlight the untapped potential of the empty space above doors and windows, we installed the BERGSHULT/SANDSHULT shelves along the entire length of the wall. They’re perfect for displaying plants or storing decorative boxes.”

More room for creativity

The heroine shared her longtime dream of owning the NORDEN gateleg table with our interior designers, and we were determined to make it happen. By placing the table next to the window, we created a dedicated handicraft-painting corner and added an ergonomic, height-adjustable chair nearby. SKÅDIS pegboards on the wall provide ample storage for all the essentials, such as wool, yarn, scissors, needles, and more, while narrow picture ledges hold new canvases ready to be transformed into masterpieces.

When expecting guests, the NORDEN table with drop-leaves can be unfolded and moved closer to the day-bed, providing ample space for everyone to sit and enjoy a meal together. Equipped with two mattresses, the day-bed is high enough for comfortable seating, while two extra folding chairs tucked away in the corner ensure every guest, including the unexpected ones, has a seat.

A private hairdressing salon

Danguolė, a former hairdresser, still welcomes visits from her relatives not just for a catch-up but also for a haircut. With her fondness for reminiscing about her occupation, a mirror with lighting is essential in the room. We've chosen a large, round LINDBYN mirror, perfect not only for hair cutting but also for getting a full-height view. To store her hairdressing accessories conveniently, we've placed a RÅSKOG trolley nearby.

“Proper lighting is key to setting a cosy mood at home, so we've paid a special attention to it in this interior. Functional lighting fixtures have been strategically positioned near the bed, mirror and desk, while decorative lamps found their place by the armchair, on the wall and TV bench.”
