At IKEA, we always look for ways to make more from less. We aim to use only renewable and recycled resources by 2030, to make sure that we create value rather than waste. When you bring the products home, we want to help you make them live as long as possible, and we offer you hundreds of solutions for a more sustainable life, from saving water and energy at hoe to sorting waste or reducing the footprint.
Natural beauty
Here at IKEA, we’re working hard to secure that all our wood comes from more sustainable sources and not from high conservation value forests or illegal logging. BJÖRKSNÄS bed frame is only one of the many products made of wood, a natural material that lends warmth, is recyclable and most importantly - renewable.
Waste to resource
The LINDKNUD rug is made of polyester from recycled PET bottles. But you won't feel it even if you stand on it barefoot. The dense, thick pile provides a soft surface to walk on, and it dampens sound.
Sustainable and purifying
We give the existing materials new life to consume less raw materials and lower our environmental impact. This is why GUNRID curtains are made from polyester from recycled PET bottles. Yet there is even more reasons to love these curtains. Their fabric is treated with a mineral-based coating that reacts to natural light and breaks down indoor air pollutants.
Have a sustainable night
The ULLVIDE sheets and pillowcases are ideal bedtime companions. It is made from organic non-chlorine bleached cotton and lyocell fibre that doesn’t need large amounts of water, pesticides or fertilisers to grow. These two materials absorb and transport moisture away from the body, so you can rest both sustainably and super comfortably at night.
Old materials, new surfaces
Call us cheap, but we don’t like throwing things away. That’s why the REINSVOLL wardrobe door is made from recycled wood covered with plastic foil made from recycled PET bottles. And although REINSVOLL is a sustainable choice, of course it doesn’t compromise on quality, design or price.
Better care for longer joy
To prolong the life of your favourite items, store them in the soft LACKISAR storage cases made from recycled PET bottles. Taking good care of your clothes and other things is a great way to minimise the effects of daily wear and tear.
The less, the better
The VÅGSJÖN and VIKFJÄRD bath towels are coloured with a dyestuff that needs lower temperatures. This means we use less water and energy in the dyeing process. They are made of cotton that comes from more sustainable sources. This means that it is grown with less water, less fertilisers and less pesticides.
Small details make big difference
Even small things, such as bathroom jars, can help you live a more sustainable life. The SAXBORGA set is made of glass and the bark of the cork oak, a lightweight, water-resistant material, making it practical for use at home. During the tree’s lifetime, the trunk can be stripped of its bark several times.
Why wood?
We’re big fans of wood. It’s a living material that ages beautifully and is both renewable and recyclable. All items in VILTO series are made of solid birch. They are hardwearing and will last for years to come, growing more graceful with age.
Three times better
The ALSEDA stool is called sustainable for a couple of reasons. First, it is made from banana fibre that is a fast growing and renewable material. Second, it serves for three functions in one and helps you consume less. Hang it on the wall as decoration, invite your guests to have a seat or use it as a coffee table.
Tomorrow can be brighter
Bamboo parts with slightly darker colour tones are often discarded in manufacturing. With the KNIXHULT lamp series, we instead let these parts enhance the expression. If you want to make the lamp even more sustainable, add a LED bulb. All the light bulbs that we sell are LED. They use 85% less energy and last 20 times longer than incandescent ones.
A kitchen made to last
The KUNGSBACKA kitchen fronts are made from recycled wood and covered with a plastic foil made from recycled PET bottles. But KUNGSBACKA is more than a sustainable and affordable product – it looks good, too! The striking matte finish and slanted edges give it a clean, streamlined look. Besides, it’s durable and guaranteed to last 25 years.
Waste sorting, sorted!
Waste sorting is a simple action and the first step towards giving waste a new life. Different types of waste require different sizes of bins, so it is convenient to have a bigger bin for plastics, some smaller ones for used batteries, etc. The flexible HÅLLBAR series that can be integrated in a drawer under your sink takes waste sorting and makes it simple.
Did you know?
Household makes up about 8% of overall fresh water consumption.
Thanks to aerators, all IKEA taps save water, without you noticing any difference in water pressure. And with the GRANSKÄR, DALLSKÄR, DANNSKÄR and ENSEN mixer taps, you can reduce the hot water you use by up to 30%. The secret is – hot water is delivered only when you need it instead of every time you lift the lever. If you lift the lever straight up, it delivers cold water. Lift it to the left and it delivers hot water.
Fastest growing material
The VARIERA cutlery and utensil trays can make your life both more sustainable and more organized. They are made from bamboo, which is not only a renewable material, but also the fastest growing plant in the world. It can grow 2 to 10 centimeters a day!
A chair from the future
We believe that recycled materials including plastics is a future of home furnishing. Therefore, instead of using solid wood, we make the ODGER chairs from wood plastic composite. It helps create a smooth surface and makes the chair easier to wipe clean.
Can plastic be sustainable?
Yes, it can. Especially if it is renewable. The bioplastic used for HEROISK and TALRIKA tableware series is made from corn, which makes it more sustainable option than the one from sources like fossil oil.
Go greener
NYPON looks like a concrete pot, but is made from recycled plastic – meaning it’s lightweight and has a lighter impact on the environment. Use them to grow flowers, spices or other greens and make your home greener in every sense of this word.
