This week’s hero is nine-year-old Greta – a curious, creative and energetic girl whose world is full of imagination. She loves drawing, building with blocks, reading and playing board games – and she’s really hoping she’ll be able to enjoy all of that in her new bedroom, which she inherited from her older brother. Unfortunately, the space is currently quite cramped and doesn’t really reflect her interests or age. Realising this, Greta’s parents turned to our interior designer, Anastasija, for help. Take a look at how the room has “grown up” once she had finished her work.

Interior designer‘s task:

  • Divide the room into several functional zones for studying, relaxation, reading, creativity and play.
  • Plan convenient and organised storage for clothes, books, toys and building blocks.
  • Create a cosy yet not overly childlike interior.
  • Avoid cluttering the already small 14-square-metre space with furniture.

Spot the transformation!

Greta’s parents wanted her room to grow along with her and to be comfortable for all kinds of activities – from playtime to homework to pyjama parties. When planning the space, Anastasija made sure to leave plenty of open area in the centre of the room for movement and play on a soft, cosy rug. When selecting furniture, she focused on pieces that would last and easily adapt to the changing needs of a growing child, with only small details – like textiles or decorations – needing to be updated over time. A neutral colour palette, brightened by vivid orange and blue accents, brings energy and warmth to the room, while carefully chosen lighting makes it a comfortable space for studying, relaxing and having fun. Although the room was designed for a young girl, it will still suit her perfectly well as a teenager.

The orange DYVLINGE armchair, with a lovely daisy-shaped cushion and a floor lamp, adds a playful touch to the room and makes a cosy spot for reading.

Finally, there’s space for everything

To fit all Greta’s clothes, jewellery and other belongings that previously had no proper place, the interior designer combined a large PAX wardrobe with a mirror, rail, drawers, pull-out trays, boxes and shelves. Worried that an adult-sized wardrobe might be out of a child’s reach? Until Greta grows taller, the BEKVÄM stepladder helps her get to the top shelves.

Layer your lighting: a ceiling light with a colour-changing bulb works well for general and mood lighting, a directional lamp by the desk is perfect for studying, and a cosy bedside light is ideal for reading or relaxing.

Above, under and beside the bed

  • Above the bed, modular BESTÅ cabinets with doors and a few open shelves for books and building sets have been installed. This practical and decorative solution allows Greta to express her interests.
  • The drawers under the bed are perfect for storing toys, books or seasonal clothes that don’t fit in the wardrobe.
  • Beside the bed are woven baskets for soft toys – when playtime is over, it’s easy to toss them inside and keep the room tidy.

The desk in Greta’s room was customised individually – with specially chosen legs and a wide tabletop, providing enough space for both homework and LEGO projects. A foot-rest under the desk helps maintain good posture, while the adjustable chair can easily adapt to the needs of a growing child.

“When designing a children's room, think ahead: choose modular furniture that lasts longer, as it’s easy to reconfigure and add new pieces, and go for a neutral colour palette. If the walls, main furniture and curtains are in calm tones, you can easily update brighter accents (such as cushions, rugs and decorations) to match the child’s age or mood.”
