What is ceramic?

Ceramic is a heat-resistant and durable material that has been used by humans to make practical objects for thousands of years. The base material is different types of clay that are oven-burned and become things like terracotta, stoneware, pottery and porcelain. At IKEA we mainly use ceramic for plant pots, porcelain, washbasins and kitchen sinks. Since it can be shaped and even glazed to the desired colour and shine, the possibilities of styles and looks are endless.

You may not have tons of time to spend decorating your home, but that doesn’t mean it needs to be short on style. Just like in the restaurant: create your special dinner at home
Just like in the restaurant: create your special dinner at home

Spending most of our time at home, we all probably long to enjoy an uplifting dinner in our favourite restaurant. So why not create the environment worthy the restaurant at home? “Home idea with IKEA”: old house with a modern kitchen
“Home idea with IKEA”: old house with a modern kitchen

Is it possible to furnish a non-standard space with standard furniture and adapt the grandparents' house to modern youth? Interior designer Birutė is convinced that it is.

Ask a designer: modern farmhouse on a budget
Ask a designer: modern farmhouse on a budget

“I love the modern farmhouse look but I don’t know how to create this look in my own home, let alone on a budget. Where do I begin?” Luckily, you’ve come to the right place. Interior designer Hans Blomquist is a seasoned pro when it comes to the modern farmhouse style, showing how achievable it can be to integrate this look into any home, and affordably too.

Before and after: a cosy and inspiring photo studio
Before and after: a cosy and inspiring photo studio

This season, “Home idea with IKEA” helps to find order in different areas of home, from bedrooms to children’s rooms to kitchens. But we believe that getting organised and staying cosy is no less important in your workplace. Therefore, this week we invite you to a slightly different environment – a photo studio of Karolina, which she calls her second home.

Ask an IKEA interior designer: combining households in style
Ask an IKEA interior designer: combining households in style

“My partner and I are moving in together, but we have different styles. What can we do?” Blending households and mixing interior design styles can be a tricky process. We chatted to an IKEA interior designer to get some ideas on how to mix and match to create a new, cohesive look.

Hide and display: storage across the home
Hide and display: storage across the home

This apartment is designed for city-dwellers with a social lifestyle – enabling impromptu dinner parties, putting favourite things on display, and hiding what is needed but not meant to be seen. There is less space for storage, so this means thinking creatively, like a sofa that fits everything – including things you might not expect.

Come and visit the first hero of the season – Neringa who has recently divorced and moved into a new apartment. A woman spends most of her time in the living room, but she is not happy with the way it looks now. Neringa dreams of a bright and pleasing interior in a modern classic style. Is it possible to create one without major repairs? Interior designer Kotryna is more than sure about that!

“Home idea with IKEA”: psychologist‘s office in the family crisis centre

After a short break, our interior designer Ūla is back to the family crisis centre in Kaunas. She has already furnished several rooms and lounge areas here, but this time her task is even more interesting: she came here to furnish a cosy and private office for a child psychologist.

“Home idea with IKEA”: small yet noticeable kitchen
“Home idea with IKEA”: small yet noticeable kitchen

They say the kitchen is the heart of your home. And for this week's heroines it seems to hold true. Dija and her daughter Toma from Vilnius view their kitchen as more than just a place to cook. It's where they relax, chat, invite friends over and spend most of their free time. Despite the multifunctional role, the family is not entirely happy with the current state of their kitchen space. Interior designer Asta showed up to help them renew.
