Come and visit the first hero of the season – Neringa who has recently divorced and moved into a new apartment. A woman spends most of her time in the living room, but she is not happy with the way it looks now. Neringa dreams of a bright and pleasing interior in a modern classic style. Is it possible to create one without major repairs? Interior designer Kotryna is more than sure about that!

Before the renovation

The living room is the main space of the new Neringa‘s home. It‘s where she works, reads, spends her free time and sleeps. However, the current layout and outdated furniture fail to meet all needs and don’t reflect her personal style.

Interior designer‘s task

Kotryna got a tough but interesting challenge. She had to create a cosy living room where modern style meets classics and a space for all the homeowner’s needs, including a TV spot, a reading corner with books storage, a comfortable working area and, of course, a bedroom. Here’s the result.

The one and only a.k.a. sofa

The most important piece of furniture in the living room that doubles as a bedroom, is a sofa-bed. For this room, we have chosen the VIMLE corner sofa, which is comfortable to read and relax on while sitting down and offers enough room to stretch out when lying down. If Neringa craves for a quick update, all she needs to do is purchase a set of new covers. And if the light-coloured covers get stained, they can simply be removed and washed.

More storage? No problem.

For storing Neringa‘s beloved books and other items, we chose BILLY bookcases. Some of them have doors to hide things that should stay out of sight, while the open shelves are for books and dear decorations. The tall BILLY bookcases allow using the full height of the living room and come with lighting that adds extra cosiness. At the bottom of the, there’s a drawer that’s handy for storing bedspreads, cushions or other items close at hand while sitting on the sofa.

The living room office

The owner of this home often works remotely, which is why we set up a little home office in her living room. The MICKE desk is almost invisible as it’s white just like the rest of the furniture in the room. It is also very practical, with drawers making it easy to keep things organised and a memo board above that’s a great place for notes and reminders.

When style meets function

In addition to their aesthetic function, most of the accessories in the living room have practical benefits, too.
  • MAJGULL curtains serve as a bright accent that also darkens the room and prevents the morning sun from disturbing your sleep.
  • STOCKHOLM flatwoven rug gives a decorative touch to the floor and keeps the room warm.
  • Two decorative mirrors on the wall look like some artwork and brighten the room making it visually larger.

“If you seek for an interior change, start with some textiles: replace the rug, hang new curtains and add some cushions. The only rule when mixing and matching the textiles is not overdoing with colours. Better include different patterns, textures or add a couple of elements creating a contrast with the overall look.”

IKEA Life at Home Report

IKEA annually conducts a global research called “Life at Home”. It gives a clearer understanding of how the life at home looks like today. This year, it has revealed how important it is that our home reflects our personal style and identity. When our home reflects us, we’re almost twice as likely to believe it’s a source of our mental wellbeing.
