Before and after: a complete terrace makeover in just one day
Terraces come in many different shapes and forms in Latvia. Irregular or regular floor plan, big and small, distant cousins of balconies, open or roofed spaces beside a house. As different as they are, there are lots of possible solutions. This time, IKEA designer remade a terrace in Bauska, turning it into an aesthetic and functional place for garden parties or leisure time for two.
This terrace in Bauska is the second place, which was redecorated as a part of the IKEA balcony makeover project, and the owners are a young couple: Olga and Edgars. Both have recently moved in the house, which was in a bad shape, and Edgars has renovated it on his own. However, the terrace still remained empty, because there never seemed to be enough time and energy to improve it. Olga says: “We have always dreamed about a nice terrace for hosting parties for our friends, having a morning tea or enjoying warm summer evenings together.” For Olga, a terrace is all about relaxing and having a good time.
A terrace for two, a terrace for many
Ieva Buka, the IKEA designer who worked on this project, explains some of the challenges: “Olgas terrace has a pentagonal shape. This meant not being able to just put square furniture in straight, 90 degree corners and having to find alternative solutions. Also, the hosts have many friends, so I had to plan as much seating as possible given the limited space without overcrowding it so that it would also be possible to relax there on weekdays.”
Small space, big plans
To solve this challenge, the designer chose to use modular outdoor sofas, an extendable table and some wall panels with benches from the ÄPPLARÖ series. The table can be adapted to 3 different sizes, seating a maximum of 10 people. The benches have some storage space, so all textiles can be stored there when not in use. For easier preparing and serving of snacks, a small outdoor kitchen table is added with place to store some dishes, hang towels or blankets or use it as a functional addition beside the grill.
Solid and modern style
Ieva Buka chose the modern style for this terrace, matching dark wood furniture with the existing wooden railing. African accents in orange and blue, as well as more exotic plants on the terrace add to the refreshing look.
Atmosphere is everything
In one corner of the terrace there is an old fireplace, and the hosts have no plans of using it for the primary purpose. Therefore, IKEA designer decided to turn the fireplace into a decorative eye-catcher by placing some candles and lanterns. The solution looks stylish, creates romantic mood and is safer than an open fire.
A dream come true
“I am very happy with the terrace design – the style matches my taste exactly and I love the functional details. Soon we are having the housewarming party, and I know that this will be the perfect place for all our friends to relax and to hang out. And I have a feeling that this will be the top place for the summer,” Olga shares her feelings about the makeover results.
